THE POWER OF REMEMBERING – the importance of history!

Psalm 78:2-4

I will open my mouth with a parable;
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;
we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,
his power, and the wonders he has done.

This wisdom Psalm speaks to the importance of seeing and understanding the hand of God as He moves in and through history.

“History should ever be the record of the works of God. History thus written, and thus taught, will so affect hope and memory in youth, as to constrain it to obedience to the God revealed; and this is the way of life for man and nation.” (Morgan)

Sharing with my fellow Church History course mate this morning, I can see the power of knowing and understanding history – especially with the perspective that all of History is “His Story” – a record of the works of God through generations.

As students of history, we are once more experiencing a deep hunger for God, a profound desire to see His purposes fulfilled in our generation and those to come. History reveals God’s Hand in the past. It thus creates a link to the present and serves as a springboard for His work in the future.

The Psalmist expects that by remembering the works of God, His people’s hearts are moved towards loyalty to His covenant.

5 He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands (Psalm 78:5-7)

History creates trust in our hearts by revealing God’s Trustworthiness through generations

May we remain students and tellers of History!
