About This Episode

REVIEW OF INTRO, EPISODE 1, 2. & 3

INTRO – Why study the character of Jesus?

  • To be a Christian is to admire Jesus so sincerely and so fervently that the whole life goes out to him in an aspiration to be like him – that’s basically what this podcast series is all about.
  • PERSONAL SHARING

o   Personally, with the passing of time (it’s been 28 years since my decision to follow Jesus and my baptism), the need to rediscover Jesus anew arises. The need to be committed to a person(relationship) and not to a set of rules or dry doctrine (religion).

o   And as one who is also called to influence others for God, I believe helping men to fall in love with the character of Jesus is one of my highest callings.

o   Every year or two, I do sense the need at some point to return to Jesus. Last year for example, I spent a lot of time in the Epistles and also in the OT (studying King David extensively through the WARRIOR). As the year drew to an end, I sensed it was time to get my bearings by centering my life once again on JESUS as the very center of my faith.

EPISODE 1 – THE STRENGTH OF JESUS- What was the first impression which Jesus made upon his contemporaries?

  • In the very first chapter of Mark’s Gospel, he tells you in four different places what impression Jesus made upon men – on John the Baptist, on the first disciples, in the way he taught (with authority) and the way he healed (with God’s power).
  • The impression of authority, mastery, power, leadership
  • The name of no man living was great enough to convey their idea of the strength which they felt resided in Jesus.
  • PERSONAL SHARING

o   Jesus inspires a sense of awe – HE IS MY SUPER HERO

o   He inspires me to face the odds of life and I have faced quite a few in the past 28 years of following Him – overcoming character weaknesses as his disciple – single, missionary, married man, corporate life, in leadership roles etc); health challenges etc.

o   Encountering Jesus did kindle a fire in me – one that saw me abandon the European dream to return to Africa and have been serving in different countries, also re-inventing myself but staying engaged in the mission etc.

EPISODE 2 – THE SINCERITY OF JESUS – Sincerity is a fundamental virtue

  • Truthfulness, honesty, plainness, frankness, simplicity, these and many others are only children of the Queen: sincerity.
  • It is the virtue which the human heart instinctively craves and looks for. It is a trait which a parent’s eyes seek for in his children.
  • Sincerity is the very blood and breath of friendship.
  • If you would see sincerity in its loveliest form, then come to Jesus. Here is a man incapable of a lie.
  • It was the belief of Jesus that a man’s word ought to be as good as his oath.
  • In an ideal world all oaths are unnecessary and unthought of.
  • There’s drawing power in the truth
  • There is something so pure and frank and noble about him that to doubt his sincerity would be like doubting the brightness of the sun.
  • What he teaches about God we can receive. What he says of the soul we can believe. What he declares of sin and the penalty of sin we can accept. What he asserts concerning the principles of a victorious life we can act upon, never doubting.
  • When he tells us to do a thing, we can do it, assured that that is the best thing to do. When he warn us against a course of action we can shun it, knowing that in that direction lie night and death.
  • The path which he exhorts us all to take we can take with boldness, convinced that if we take it we shall arrive safe at home at last.
  • PERSONAL SHARING
  • Telling the truth – my experience returning from the US last year – on the flight and at the airport.
  • Choosing between my feelings, popular opinion and the truth of God’s Word

EPISODE 3 – THE POISE OF JESUS – the fine balance of his faculties, the equilibrium of his nature.

Jesus is:

  • Enthusiastic but never fanatical
  • Emotional but never hysterical
  • Imaginative but never flighty
  • Practical but never dull
  • Courageous but never reckless
  • Prudent but never cowardly
  • Unique but not eccentric
  • Sympathetic but never sentimental
  • Pious but never sanctimonious
  • Religious but never superstitious

He had in him all the virtues but none was overgrown

  • People could never push him for example into a hasty word or an unrighteous mood
  • Through the ages, he remains a timeless example of what a man should be!

PERSONAL SHARING

  • In my first decade as a disciple – I was viewed as being too nice – got challenged as a leader to develop a flint forehead capable of confronting people, speak the truth boldly yet lovingly
  • My reaction two years ago towards our property managers – I have had to learn to express my frustrations in a respectful way.
