About This Episode

EPISODE 4 – THE NARROWNESS OF JESUS (Review)

We saw that whereas the word narrowness has a negative connotation in our modern parlance, Jesus’ narrowness was for a purpose – it sharpened his effectiveness and focus. He limited himself in a couple of ways:

  • Territorial narrowness (Spent his whole life in a small area, Palestine).
  • Scope of his work (His life was narrow – focused on ONE THING).
  • Intellectually narrow (I am the Way, the Truth and the Life).
  • Morally narrow (a limited range of approvals).

Benefits of narrowness

  • It is only when a man picks out some particular little sphere and says, “inside of this I purpose to work,” that real life begins and his heart learns the art of singing.
  • It’s the narrow path that leads to life.
  • Jesus at 12.
  • The river versus swamp analogy.

PRACTICALS

For the past decade or more, I have personally tried to exercise some level of narrowness. In my first decade or more as a disciple, I served in so many roles – kids kingdom, song leading, singles, campus, teens, marrieds, and served by leading  different and specialized groups – Bible talk, sector, Region, Church, etc

I have tried narrowing things down to areas of giftedness like teaching, translation/interpreting, benevolence combining with my wife’s – hospitality, administration/organization, singing.

The older we become as Christians it is necessary that we find our place, our sweet spot where we can pour out ourselves for the Kingdom and also find deeper fulfillment in the process. But it starts with having a heart to serve in different capacities as the need arises.

EPISODE 5 – THE BREADTH OF JESUS

  • Jesus’ narrowness is a product of his breadth.
  • By limiting himself, he founded a Kingdom broad as humanity and of which there shall be no end.
  • If you would be broad, then be narrow.
  • The spirit of Jesus was different from that of the limited or narrow minded Jews. He embraced Samaritans, Tax collectors and people from all walks of life.
  • Jesus’ ideas are broad enough and applicable in all ages.

PRACTICALS

The breadth of Jesus has taught me to accept and adapt to different cultures – mainly English, French & German. Even eating habits – eating of snails in Abidjan for example.

My mum calls me the Francophone.

Jesus was the most hopeful of all teachers – gives every student a chance.

His breadth gives me a broader vision of life – a citizen of the world.
